October New

October 16, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Bringing children and parents together at school is one of the goals of Riverton’s School Success Plan.  Pumpkin Fest is a great Riverton tradition that helps us to meet this goal.  This past Saturday was a beautiful day for Pumpkin Fest 2017 and fun way to celebrate Fall with the Riverton Community.  My family and I enjoyed painting pumpkins, playing games and eating cotton candy! It was great to see so many families out in support of Riverton School. Thank you to all the parents who donated items for the fundraising, volunteered, and participated and a very special thank to moms, Stephanie, Meaghan, Brandi and Trish for all the behind-the-scenes work required to put this event on for our school!

Bully Prevention
Did you know that October is National Bullying Prevention Month? At Riverton School we are striving to create a bully-free environment where everyone feels safe and empowered to teach and to learn.  At our first school wide community meeting last week, we reinforced this message by teaching students to use the Stop, Walk and Talk technique to address bullying behaviors. Stop, Walk and Talk is the bully prevention method recommended by PBIS.  It teaches students how to stand up to behavior they feel is offensive or not wanted, and empowers students to be self-advocates. The Stop, Walk and Talk strategy consists of teaching students to use three simple and progressive steps: indicating through words and gestures to stop, walking away if the problem continues, and finally talking to an adult if the issue is still not resolved.  The overall impact of this bully prevention program is to decrease bullying issues at school to create a more positive school climate.  For specific details about the program please see the resource on the link: https://www.pbis.org/common/cms/files/pbisresources/bullyprevention_ES.pdf

On Wednesday, October 25, Riverton School will be participating in Unity Day 2017. This is a day the Riverton School community will come together and send one large ORANGE message of support, hope and unity to show that we are together against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.  We invite all students, family members and staff to wear the color orange that day to show that we care about making Riverton a school where everyone feels safe and empowered to teach and to learn.  At school, Riverton students will be taking a pledge to stand up against bullying by speaking up, reaching out and being a friend.

Side x Side
Riverton School is partnering with Side x Side to enhance and deepen our students learning of curriculum through art. Side x Side brings local artists in to partner with teachers in integrating science, technology, literacy and the humanities with the arts to engage in students in learning.   Below is a list of what each grade level will be working on with Side x Side this year at Riverton:
Kindergarten: Printmaking with Sarah Boyden and Alicia Uth
1st Grade: Bookmaking with Sarah Boyden and Mia Bogyo
2nd Grade: Moving Ocean: Paper Mache sculptures with Sarah Boyden and Leah Cross
3rd Grade: Mural and Physical Theater: Life of Bees with Laurie Downey and Gretchen Berg (October-November)
4th Grade: Physical Theater with Gretchen Berg
5th Grade: Filmmaking: Growth Mindset with Anne Ackerman, Casey Ledoux and Terrence Wolfe (October-November)

Flu Clinic
The Flu Clinic at Riverton School is scheduled for November 2. One of the best ways to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot every year.  Riverton will hold a Flu Clinic for students and staff on November 2, from 12:30-2;30.  Look for a permission slip to be coming home with your child soon.  If you would like for your child to get a flu shot please fill out the form and return it to us as soon as possible.

Lost and Found
Just a friendly reminder to please check the Lost and Found for missing items. Lost and Found is located toward the back of the front lobby. Remember to sign in with the office if going to the Lost and Found area during school hours.  Thank you!

Reminder that Picture Day is Friday, October 20! SMILE!

The October PTO meeting is scheduled for October 26, 5:30 in the Media Center. Please come and find out what you can do to support Riverton School!

Happy Fall,

Mrs. Hanna
