Principal Update - Sept 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the new school year gets underway, I want to welcome you as our partner in your child’s education.  We value, appreciate, and seek out your involvement and collaboration for the success of your child. Together we want to build on your hopes and dreams for your child’s success in school and future.  We are asking for your commitment to make sure your child attends school every day possible this year.

Positive attendance is key to keeping students on track academically and engaged in all aspects of school life. Every day counts and good attendance is important.  High attendance rates are linked to better student achievement.  This is true for every grade PreK through high school.

It is understood that some absences are unavoidable and students must stay home when they are unwell. The most important message to our students is that attendance matters. Before you know it, missing just two or three days a month can translate to missing 4 to 5 weeks of the school year. Too many absences, represent lost learning time in the classroom.

Families should avoid extended vacations that require students to miss school. Kindly try to line up vacations with the school’s schedule. This would apply for medical appointments as well.

We want to make the most of our time together in order to support our students. We are asking for your support in helping your child get to school on time by 8:20 a.m. every day this year.

When our students are not at school, we notice because we care!  We want to ensure that everyone receives the education they need to reach their potential. We value your support and encourage you be an active participant in your child’s education. Parents are welcome to help in the school, to be active in school-wide functions, and to contact us with your questions at 874-8210.  Thank you for all you do.  We look forward to working together to support your child’s school success.

First Day Packets
Please take the time to read through the important information packet sent home on your child’s first day that includes required school forms for all families to complete and return to your child’s teacher. If any of your emergency information should change during the school year (such as emergency contact numbers), please stop by the Main Office to provide us with this new information. It is important to always have the most up-to- date contact information on your child(ren), including phone numbers and email addresses.  Thank you!
Arrival and Dismissal
Arrival and dismissal can be hectic times of the day at school. Here are some tips for making morning drop off and end up day pick up run smoothly:
·      Riverton School hours are 8:20-2:50. Breakfast is served in classrooms between 8:05-8:20.  Students may not be dropped off before 8:05.  There is no adult supervision before 8:05. If you need childcare before or after school, please call the City of Portland Recreation at 808-5400.

·      Please be sure to obey all the speed limits on and surrounding the school grounds to keep students safe during drop off and pick up.

·      During drop-off and pick up times, please use the parent loop at the far end of the school building.  Drop-off should be a kiss-and-go. If parents need to park, please pull into a parking space to allow for a smoother traffic pattern for others.
The front doors are for bus students only during drop off and pick up times.

·      Please notify the school office if there are changes to your child’s regular dismissal plans as early as possible, but NO LATER THAN 2 PM. After this time, the message might not make it to the teacher and child. Any changes require a parent/guardian to contact the school through note, email or phone call (874-8210).

·      For safety and security reasons, we are asking all students to say goodbye to their parent/guardian at drop off outside, so that students can walk to class independently. Any adult who wishes to visit a classroom must sign in and out at the main office, and wear a visitor’s badge. Also, the school door is locked each day at 8:40. Please press the doorbell on the wall to the left of the door to be let inside, and come to the office. The minor inconveniences these procedures may present are a small price to pay for our school’s safety and security.

Fourth Grade News
Riverton fourth graders have started the year off with gusto!  The readers, writers, and mathematicians in grade four are learning about rounding and place value in math, character changes in reading, and creating strong leads in writing class.  Plus, fourth graders are learning about mapping skills, the great state of Maine, and speaking respectfully toward others with our Second Step curriculum. Thank you all for your support with the great start we've had this year! From, Mrs. Ouellett, Ms. Nicole, and Mrs. Libby

Vision and Hearing
Vision and hearing screening will take place on September 25 and 26 for students in grades 1,3 and 5, and on November 14 for PreK and Kindergarten students.  You will receive a notice from the school nurse only if your child has difficulty with the screening. If you receive a referral for further screening, please schedule your child for an evaluation with an eye doctor as soon as possible and let us know the results of their exam.

Welcome back!

August 7, 2017

Dear Riverton Elementary Family and Friends,

It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I write this welcome letter for the 2017-2018 school year as the new principal of Riverton Elementary School.  I am both excited and honored to become a part of the Riverton School Community.

This summer, I have been spending much of my time getting to know the building, the school’s staff and becoming familiar with Riverton’s School Success Plan.  In doing so, I have learned that Riverton is a very unique and special school where strong relationships are made between home and school, and staff members are dedicated to meeting the needs of all learners.  In her time as principal, Mrs. Malia has built a strong foundation of academic excellence at Riverton, and I am committed to continuing her legacy.

For the 2017-2018 school year at Riverton Elementary, we will continue the structures that have assisted our progress over the last six years.  These structures include:
  • Grade-level teacher collaboration, coaching and co-teaching
  • Partnerships with C-Port Credit Union, Riverton Community Partnership, Learning Works, St. Joseph’s College, Boys and Girls Club, Foster Grandparent Program through Opportunity Alliance, Side x Side, Culture Club and others!
  • Professional development in Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop, Everyday Math, PBIS and Second Step
  • Targeted Title One interventions for students who have not yet met proficiency
  • The BEST Parent-Teacher Organization!!! The PTO Board outside of the office displays some of the exciting events the PTO provides for our students, staff and community. Parents are automatically members!
I am excited for the year ahead and looking forward to working together in creating a positive and successful school year for everyone!
Sincerely,
Ann HannaPrincipal
